{{ legacy_api_notice() }}

An HTTP 404: Not Found error is returned by the API when a requested resource can not be found. This can happen for one of several reasons:

- You are attempting to hit an endpoint that does not exist, like `https://api.bonsai.io/covfefe`.
- You are asking for a cluster, plan, release or space that does not exist, or that is not available to your account.

## Example

A request to a path the API does not have gets this response, whatever its method, headers or body:

```json
{
  "errors": [
    "Please review the documentation available at https://bonsai.io/docs/api/",
    "Undefined request."
  ],
  "status": 404
}
```

Like every other call, it needs a valid [API token](@/docs/api/legacy/authentication/overview/index.md): without one, the response is an [HTTP 401: Unauthorized](@/docs/api/legacy/errors/401-unauthorized/index.md) error instead. No [scope](@/docs/account/api-tokens/index.md#scopes) is needed.

A request for something that does not exist gets a message naming what was not found:

| Request | Message |
| --- | --- |
| `GET`, `PUT`, `PATCH` or `DELETE` `/clusters/[:slug]` | `Cluster not found.` |
| `GET /plans/[:plan-slug]` | `Plan '[:plan-slug]' not found. Please use the /plans endpoint for a list of available plans.` |
| `GET /releases/[:slug]` | `Release not found.` |
| `GET /spaces/[:path]` | `Space [:path] not found. Please use the /spaces endpoint for a list of available spaces.`, or `Invalid space path.` for a path that is not shaped like a space path |

For example:

```json
{
  "errors": [
    "Cluster not found."
  ],
  "status": 404
}
```

The `"status": 404` key confirms the error is an HTTP 404: Not Found error.

## Troubleshooting

The first thing to look at when troubleshooting an HTTP 404: Not Found error is the error message array which is returned from the API. Also make sure to check for any typos that may have ended up in the request. Clusters are found by their slug, not their name, and spaces by their full path.

If you're still unsure why you are receiving the error, then please [shoot us an email](mailto:support@bonsai.io).
